Duties Of Christian Faith. Heb 13:1-25

In the final chapter of Hebrews,  the author gives a series of exhortations for christian living.  The readers were exhorted to continue in their brotherly. In the past  they have demonstrated such love one to another (6:10). This love should not be limited to only brethren. They must demonstrate this love to strangers by showing hospitality. Since Christians were traveling to escape persecution and for ministry, it was a needed grace at that time. The author refers to Old Testament incidents to show that this would bring unexpected blessing from God(Gen 18,19). They were also encouraged to remember those who are in prison  for their faith. Their needs must not be forgotten. They were also urged  take their  marriage seriously and remain faithful to one another. The author  expresses God's approval of marriage and His blessing upon it (Gen 2:18-25). They were reminded of the price one has to pay for adultery and immorality. It will bring shame, disgrace and distrust upon family as well as to the cause of Christ. The author warns that God will judge them. They were also admonished against greediness. They are to be content with what they have. The basis of contentment is found in the promise of God. "I will never fail you,nor forsake you"(Deut 31:6,8; Josh 1:5). When we have such assurance of care, we can confidently say "God is my helper and I will not be afraid"(Psalm 118:6).These instructions are equally important and applicable in our lives.

The readers are exhorted to remember and follow those who taught them the Word of God(13:7). They probably had died but remember the outcome of their lives  and follow their example. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. So be loyal to Him and to the  new covenant. Do not be attracted to the ceremonial rules about food or traditions. They are useless. But your spiritual strength comes from God's grace. We have an alter. This is a reference to the sacrifice Christ offered on the cross. The sacrifice of the day of atonement was a type of Christ' death on the cross.  On the day of atonement, the bodies of animals were burned outside the camp.  Priest were not allowed to eat  of the sacrifice offered on the day of atonement. So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gate. Under the new covenant believers are privileged to partake of the blessings of Christ perfect sacrifice. The writer encourages his readers to go out side the gate bearing the reproach Christ bore(13:13). Christians must be prepared to suffer shame and separation for Christ.

The author introduces a new concept of sacrifices and call upon the readers to offer the  sacrifice of praise to God continually(13:15,16). Also they were encouraged to do good and share what they have with those in need. In such sacrifices, God is well pleased. They are to obey their spiritual leaders. Such obedience make it possible for them to fulfill their responsibilities with joy. They are accountable to God. The author requests prayer for himself and others who are with him. He is confident that their prayer will hasten his return. Then added the benediction which is addressed to the God of peace. This peace is the result of new covenant which Christ has established once for all. He is our great shepherd who is able to keep us safe and produce in us that which is pleasing in His sight through the new covenant. This prayer ends with ascribing glory and praise to Jesus Christ(13:21).

The writer ends this epistle with an appeal.  He wants his readers to listen willingly his word of exhortation  about Christ who is the complete and final revelation of God. He wants his readers to know that Timothy has been set free from prison. Many scholars hold the view that, the mention of Timothy here suggests, perhaps Apostle Paul wrote the epistle of Hebrews. The author expresses the desire that he and Timothy may together visit the readers to whom this letter was addressed. The readers are asked to greet their church leaders and to all fellow believers there. The phrase "Christians from Italy" may suggests that  this letter was written to or from there. The author closes this letter by wishing God's grace upon all the readers of this epistle. May God bless you all. Amen

Fix Your Eyes Upon Jesus. Heb 12:1-29

After explaining examples of the heroes of faith, the author exhorts the readers to fix their eyes upon Jesus the supreme example of faith. Christian life is a race and it must be run with patience looking unto Jesus. Heroes of faith testify us of the power of faith and we must follow their example. Christ is the beginning and the end of Christian life. He is the pioneer and the perfecter of our faith.  Consider the example of Christ  who willingly endured the cross despising the shame of death because of the joy of becoming the redeemer of the world. Christ's example would motivate us to lay aside every form of sin  that hinders our spiritual progress. Consider, how much greater was Christ's suffering than ours and the eternal blessings of it. The writer reminds the readers that though they suffered scorn and opposition, they have not suffered death. So let us run the race set before us by looking to Jesus who is seated at the right of God in heaven.

From verses 5 to 13, the writer encourages the readers to regard their suffering as fatherly discipline of God.
Here the author quotes proverbs 3:11-12. This suffering is actually a growth process in their spiritual life. Suffering  is not always the proof of sin.Though Christ was sinless,He learned obedience through suffering and became the author of eternal life(5:8,9). The discipline of these readers are compared with the suffering of Christ. God's children receive His chastening. Believers who sin and never be chastened are not actually saved. God disciplines us so that we might share in His holiness. In fact chastening is a training process to get in shape spiritually. Chastening gives assurance of God's love towards us. No disciple is joyous for a while but afterward it will yield peaceable fruit of righteousness(12:11).

So readers are encouraged to stand firm on their shaky legs so that they may not become spiritually disable. Pursue straight path, so that you may not be dislocated and get worse. When few slip away from faith, it is easier for many to fall. So encourage each other and live in harmony. Christians must try to live in peace with everyone. Also they should live a consecrated  or holy life. Without holiness no one will see God. Practical sanctification is essential for growing into the likeness of Christ(1 Thess 5:23). The writer warns the danger of
apostasy. Apostates would not receive the blessings of the grace of God. Apostates are the defectors from the truth though they profess to be Christians. They are like poisonous root that corrupt many by their doubts and denials. It can lead to immorality and godlessness(2 Peter 2:10).  Esau  is an example. He traded his birthright for a single meal. Afterward when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for Isaac to change his mind or reverse the blessing. Those who willingly renounce Christ for worldly gains or pleasure, can not be renewed to repentance. Such is the solemn warning against apostates.

In verses 18 to 29 , a comparison is drawn between old covenant and new covenant. Here the writer warns the danger of obeying the old covenant and rejecting the new covenant which Christ established.  The old covenant was inaccessible and intimidating. Like rest of the warning, the purpose of this warning is to prevent the readers from turning way from Christ and His blessing.  The scene of Mount Sinai was one of blackness of darkness and fearful.. Men and animals  faced death even by touching where God stood( Ex 19:12,13). Moses said about this place that "I am terrified and trembling"(12:21). But Under the new covenant,  we come to a figurative mount Zion, which is the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. Those who believe in Christ have access to this place under the new covenant. They will enjoy it's fullest blessing when Lord returns.

Angels minister there. This is the place of  the general assembly and where the church of the firstborn are assembled. There we see God, the judge of all people. Here believers are made perfect by Jesus the mediator of the new covenant. His sprinkled blood speaks of cleansing and pardon, unlike the blood of Abel which cry out for vengeance. Those who disobeyed God under the old covenant have perished. Then, how much more the punishment of those who reject Christ? Now God speaks  from heaven through Christ. When God spoke, it shook the earth and heaven(Ex 19:18). God will shake the earth and heaven again (Haggai 2:6). Probably this is going to happen at the return of Christ. All things are temporal and will be destroyed. Only the spiritual and heavenly  things will remain. Believers will inherit a kingdom that cannot be destroyed . So let us be thankful and please God  by worshiping Him with reverence. The writer closes the chapter with a warning."Our God is a consuming fire"(Deut 4:24). Now God is speaking through Christ. Do we hear His voice and obey Him? May God help us.

Faith of Abraham and the Patriarchs. Heb 11:8-40.

Faith is the response to the promises of God. Among the heroes of faith, Abraham has a prominent place. He is known as the "Father of the faithful".Abraham's faith had three stages. First His faith was awakened by God. Secondly Abraham's faith was disciplined.  Thirdly his faith was perfected. Abraham's faith was also associated with those of Sarah, Isaac,Jacob and Joseph. Abraham was an idol worshiper before God appeared to him(Joshua 24:2). By faith Abraham obeyed when God called him(11:8).  He went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he lived in the promised land as a foreigner(11:9). He looked for the city which has the foundation whose builder and maker is God. He hoped for God's kingdom. God's kingdom is
"God's people, living in God's place, under God's rule, enjoying God's blessings". He lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob as a stranger and pilgrim. Abraham's heart was set upon the heavenly city, the  new Jerusalem. Christ said Abraham rejoiced to see My day(John 8:56). So God was not ashamed to be called the God of Abraham(Ex 3:6).

When Abraham and Sarah were united in faith, they receive the promised son Isaac.  How Abraham's faith was tested is explained in chapter 22. God promised Abraham that all  nations will be blessed through his son Isaac. Later God asked Abraham to offer Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham believed that God is faithful to raise Isaac from the dead. Figuratively, Abraham did receive back his son from the dead(11:19). Abraham loved God more than his son Isaac(Gen 22:12,16-18). His faith was made complete by his obedience(James 2:22). Abraham learned that God loves those who trust Him and  that He is  a God of providence(Gen 22:14). He recognized, God as the righteous judge of all earth(Gen 18:25). Abraham is called the prophet and the friend of God(Gen 20:7;Is 41:8; James 2:23). Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Salvation is by faith, but faith finds it's channel of expression through works. Some one said "Faith alone will save but the faith that saves will not be alone". Abraham's experience teaches that trials are there to prove the reality of our faith in God.

The writer associates the faith of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph with the faith of Abraham. All these faithful men died without receiving what God had promised them. but saw it afar off. Isaac, old and blind , saw the future of  his children. It was by faith that he blessed his two sons, Jacob and Esau. By faith Jacob blessed the two sons of Joseph, believing that God would fulfill His promise to them.  He worshiped God for His faithfulness,
leaning on his staff. By faith Joseph spoke about Israels departure from Egypt and commanded them to carry his bones with them, when they depart. So faith looks from a distance and rejoices in the future blessings.

Moses' faith is mentioned  with the faith of his parents. Great heroes of faith usually come from godly home.
By faith Moses' parents hid the child believing that God's promise would be fulfilled through him (Genesis 15:13,14). By faith Moses rejected the Egyptian way of life and refused to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. By faith Moses saw that the riches of Christ is far grater than the riches of Egypt. By faith he forsook Egypt. By faith Moses kept the Passover, in obedience to the command of God and Israel was delivered from Egyptian captivity.  By faith Israel went right through the red sea to safety.By Faith the wall of Jericho fell. By faith Rahab the harlot was saved from destruction.

Now the writer summarizes the faith of many who deserve recognition. By faith Daniel stopped the mouth of the lion and his three friends were delivered from from the flaming fire. David escaped the javelin of Soul and Elijah was delivered from Jezebel. By faith, women received their dead  by resurrection(1 King 17:17-24;
2 King 4:32-37).Many of them were treated as though, they don't deserve to live in this world. Some were slain with the sword(Jer 26:23). Many were tempted to forsake their faith in God. They preferred to die than to become apostates. Isaiah was sawed in half. Zechariah was stoned(2 Chron 24:20,21).They were  all examples of faith. Though they received not  the promises, they have received God's approval(11:39). For God had planned something better for us so that only together with us, would be made perfect. It does not mean that their blessing is dependent upon our blessing.  It simply means that without us,  the heroes of the Old Testament could not enter into the blessing of the new covenant which Christ has fulfilled. The writer encourages the readers to endure the trials and remain faithful to Christ. May God help us to follow the example of the heroes of Faith!!

Faith Is The Superior Principle of Life, Heb 11:1-7

The writer of Hebrews has concluded chapter that, faith is the dynamic by which the just shall live( Heb: 10:38).Faith is the assurance that what God has promised, He will fulfill. Also faith is the assurance upon which all christian hopes are based. Faith is not a leap into unknown or a crutch for the weakling but the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the conviction of things not seen(11:1). The writer explains what faith does than what it is. This confidence and conviction are based on the divine revelation. True faith is produced by God. It is taking God at His word. The old testament fathers received God's approval because of their faith.

By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God. This visible world points to an invisible Creator. There are many views about creation account. Material science cannot explain the origin of the world. The theory of evolution has no satisfactory answer for the origin. The conclusions of all these theories are not final and in a state of flux. All these theories of origins have never been proved and still remain as only theories. But the Bible starts with the statement that "In the beginning God created the heavens and earth". No one witnessed the act of creation, yet by faith we know that the worlds were framed by the word of God.

Now the writer illustrates lives of the Old Testament leader to show, what faith does and how it enabled them to have a right relationship to God. Abel, Enoch and Noah were heroes of faith lived before  the days of Abraham. Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. Abel is the picture of true worship.God revealed to Abel that there is a right  and there is a wrong way to approach God.He offered  his sacrifice by faith and it was more acceptable than Cain offered. H received  from God the testimony that he was righteous. Christ is the  new and living way to approach God. He is the lamb that was slained. We cannot devise our own way to worship God. We are exhorted to offer the sacrifices of praise to God continually through Jesus Christ(13:15).

By faith Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying. He walked with God in a time of wickedness. At the age of 65 Enoch started walking with God along with his family (Gen 5:21-24).  Walking implies, Faith and fellowship with God. Before he was translated at the age 365, Enoch had received the testimony that he pleased God. It is impossible to please God without faith. He that comes to God must believe in the existence of  sovereign God and live accordingly. God is the rewarder of those who seek Him sincerely. They will finally enter His presence either by the way of death or by rapture. When Christ returns, those who are in Christ will be caught up in the clouds to meet Him in the air and they will be with the Lord for ever
(1 Thess 4:16,17).Do you have that blessed hope?

Verse 7 shows the faith of Noah. By faith he built an ark to save his family from the flood. With no sign of a flood or knowledge of it, Noah built the ark, taking God at His word. It shows his conviction of things not seen. Faith enabled Noah to become a witness for God. He was a preacher of righteousness. By his act of faith he condemned the unbelieving world. Through faith Noah became heir of the righteousness. Faith is our response to God's revelation. Without faith it is impossible to please God. May God help us to follow the example of Abel, Enoch and Noah.

Warning Against Willful Sin. He 10:26- 39.

In this passage the writer indicates the warning against willful sin. These are the people those who received the knowledge of truth. Knowledge the truth never saves but faith in Christ They identify with the local church but are not born again(1 John 2:19).They disregard the new covenant and the gathering of the believers, and denies Christ as Savior. (10:29). Peter speaks of false prophets and apostates who have knowledge, but not saved(2 Peter 2:20,21).Willful sin is more than yielding to some temptations but a deliberate and presumptuous sin of rejecting Christ. For them, there remains no more sacrifice for sins but to fall into God's hand for fearful judgment(10:31). The author quotes Deuteronomy 32:35-36  to show that willful sin will be judged. The writer argues that, the punishment for despising the grace and mercy of loving God revealed in Christ Jesus will be how sever! The blood of Christ is the instrument by which we are made to share the blessings of the new covenant. Those who regard this "blood" as common, in fact insult the Spirit of grace  and will be judged. This passage does not teach that believers can loose their salvation. Those who teach that believers can loose salvation,  in fact question God's faithfulness and His grace. This passage was intended as a warning to those who made only an outward commitment to the new covenant.

The writer began the practical exhortation in chapter 10:19 to 25. Then we see a solemn warning in verses 26 to 31. Now the warning gives way to encouragement in verses 32-39.They were warned against the danger of apostasy. Now they are told that such will not be their case. He recalls their previous experiences. They faithfully endured great suffering and were exposed to public ridicule. They were beaten and suffered along with those who were in the prison for their faith. When all they owned were taken away from them, they accepted it with joy. They endured all this with a strong and unwavering faith in the eternal inheritance.

The readers are encouraged not to through away their confidence that had sustained them in their trials but patiently endure to the end to receive the promise. The author here quotes Habakkuk 2:4 to reassure to readers of the return of Christ. The life that pleases God is the life of faith. The just shall live by faith. Those who draws back and become apostates, will perish in their sin of not trusting in Christ. The writer
is convinced that the readers have faith that assures their salvation(10:39). Do you have that assurance?

The Superiority of Christ's Sacrifice. Heb 10:1-25

Here the writer shows the contrast between the Levitical priesthood and the priesthood of Christ. Tabernacle was an earthly sanctuary but Christ ministers in a heavenly sanctuary. He ministers under the new covenant of grace rather than one of works. The sacrifice of the day of atonement could not provide fellowship with God. For it was impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins or cleanse the conscience of the worshiper(10:2-4). The old covenant sacrifices were repeated and reminded people of their sins year after year (10:11). They could not take away their sins but only cover until Christ by His own sacrifice made us holy. The author quotes Psalm 40:6-7 here  to show the inadequacy of the old covenant sacrifices  Christ came to do the will of the Father. He came to fulfill the divine will of the Father and take away the first that He may establish the second.  Thus God made us holy by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ once for all(10:10). The finality of Christ's sacrifice is evident from the fact that He no longer stands and ministering but is now seated  at the right hand of God. He is our royal high priest. Here the author quotes Jeremiah 31:33-34, to show that the sacrifice of Christ has fulfilled  the promise of the new covenant. So in the sacrifice of Christ we find forgiveness for sin and there is no need for additional offering(10:18).This is the assurance of our faith.

In light of the finished work of atonement by Christ and His high priestly ministry, the author exhorts believers to draw confidently into the presence of God. Only the high priest could enter there under the old covenant. This privilege now belongs to every believer. By His death and resurrection Christ has opened a new and living way for us. When Christ died the veil that separated us was rent from top to bottom (Mark 15:38).He is our living way and the great high priest to the mercy seat, the throne of grace, and to the loving God. Our confidence does rest in Christ who is our mediator before God. In view of such privileges, the writer encourages his readers to draw near to God, with true hearts fully trusting Him. Christ has cleansed our hearts and conscience by His blood(1 Pet 1:2). Our bodies being washed with pure water. This is done by the transforming power of the Word, which the  Holy Spirit applies in us.

The author encourages the readers to hold fast to their faith without wavering in the face of discouragements, doubts, and even unbelief. Because God is faithful in His promises. Also they were  exhorted to show their love towards fellow believers by encouraging one another to abound in good works. They were not to forsake the assembling of believers. They were encouraged to be faithful in the attendance of these meetings for their own good and in light of our Lord's return drawing near(10:25).Fellowship provides encouragement in faith. It gives us a sense of belonging and acceptance that we don't receive from the world. Fellowship allows us to learn from matured believers and gain spiritual wisdom. Also fellowship  helps to discern false teachings.  Young believers are susceptible to false teaching. Healthy teaching is necessary to discern truth from error. Fellowship prepare us to face Christ confidently at His return(1 John 2:28).It encourages us to live an holy life and serve Christ Faithfully. May God help us to appreciate all that He has done for us.Amen.

The Superior Priesthood of Christ.Heb 9:1-28

In Hebrews chapter 9, the author shows the superiority of the new covenant over the old covenant. The old covenant under the law of Moses was only a shadow of good things to come.  The author gives a detailed account of the Tabernacle and it's ordinances  to show their inefficiency to cleanse the conscience of the worshiper.Tabernacle was the earthly sanctuary erected in the wilderness where God's presence was visible.
It had two rooms. The outer room was called Holy place and the inner room,  the Holy of Holies. They were separated by a veil.In the Holy place were the golden candlestick, the table of show bread and the alter of incense. Inside the Holy of Holies were the ark of the covenant with it mercy seat  and the cherubim of glory where God's presence was manifested. The Ark contained the table of the covenant, golden pot of manna and the Aaron's budded rod.The author mentions the placing of the golden alter within the Holy of Holies because of it"s close association with the ritual(Lev16). The alter of incense was a type of Christ and His intercessory ministry.

Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies once a year with the blood of atonement offered for his sins and for the sins of the people(Lev 16).The sin mentioned  here is the unintentional sin(Num 15:27,28). There was no sacrifice for intentional sins(Num 15:30,31; Heb 10:26). The Holy of Holies  was inaccessible to people except the high priest. Therefore fellowship with God was not possible until the death of Christ and the veil was rent from top to bottom. Thus the sacrifices offered under old covenant could not cleanse the conscience of the worshiper. They were temporary ordinances of flesh and not spirit.  Only through Christ we can have perfect fellowship with God.

From verses 11 to 22, the author shows the contrast between the atonement of the law and the atonement of Christ.Christ serves in a greater and perfect tabernacle. The earthly tabernacle was symbolic and temporary. He did not offer the blood of goats and calves but His own life.  Thus He obtained eternal redemption for us.The blood  of bulls and of goats and the ashes of heifer could only cleanse the flesh and not the conscience (Num 19). But the blood of Christ is able to cleanse our conscience from dead works to serve the living God(9:13,14). Christ is the mediator of the new covenant and guarantees a  perfect salvation. A covenant is sealed  and made effective by death. So Christ's death was necessary to make the new covenant effective. Under the old covenant the earthly things were cleansed with blood(Ex 24:8). Without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin. The author concludes that the heavenly things are to be cleansed by a better sacrifice. Christ instituted the Lord"s Supper by saying"this is My blood of the new covenant which is shed for many for the forgiveness of their sins"(Matt 26:28). Let us observe it with reverence.

From verses 23 to 28, we read about three appearances  of Christ. First He came to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. His incarnation was to suffer and die for our sin. Then He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God as our mediator and intercessor. He is able to help us in times of need to enjoy fellowship with God and serve Him(4:16).Unlike the Old covenant, Christ does not have to appear again and again because He put away sin by one sacrifice. Then again he shall appear a second time in power and glory to culminate the salvation for all those who eagerly waiting for Him.  Christ came once  to bear our sin and die for us. Now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation(2 Cor 6:2). It is appointed for all men to die once. After that there is no opportunity for salvation, only the judgment.  Do you know Jesus Christ as your savior?May God help you..

Christ Offers a Superior Covenant. Heb 8:1-13.

In Hebrews chapter one to seven the author was explaining the person and the qualifications of Jesus Christ, our great high priest. He is superior to prophets and the angels(Chapter 1). He is our great mediator(2:17). Christ is Superior to Moses and Joshua (Chapter. 3  and 4).  He is the divinely appointed and qualified high priest to show sympathy(5:1-10). Christ's priesthood is superior to Aaron because it is in the order of Melchizedek(Chapter. 7).In fact Hebrews Chapter eight marks a new division  in the epistle. Chapter eight starts with the statement that the old covenant was good but the new covenant Christ established is better. Because He is the great high priest for ever, He sat down on the right hand of the throne of God and His ministers in the true sanctuary of heaven. Earthly Tabernacle was only a type and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary. It was made in the pattern shown to Moses  by God and temporary. But Christ  ministers in the true heavenly sanctuary and His priesthood is eternal. Also He ministers under the new covenant of grace. The main function of the priest was to offer gifts and sacrifices to God for the people. Christ's death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice. Levitical sacrifices and tabernacle were the shadows of heavenly things to come(8:5).So Christ is the mediator of better covenant with better promises(8:6).

From verses 7 to 13 , the author shows the superiority of the new covenant Jesus Christ established through His blood. He argues that if the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant(7:7). The author quotes Jeremiah 31:31-34 in the next five verses here. A covenant is an agreement between two parties.God in his grace made agreement which man receives. The covenants are the expressions of divine will designed to bring fellowship between God and men.  Old covenant was mediated by Moses between God and Israel. It was perfect, holy, righteous and good. It became faulty because of the failure Israel to obey.So it became invalid. The Lord sent His prophets again and again to renew His covenant with Israel. But they mocked them and despised their words until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against His people, and there was no remedy(2 Chro 36:15,16).Thus the first covenant failed to
accomplish it's purpose because of the weakness man.Prophet Jeremiah foretold about  a new and perfect covenant(31:31-34).

In due time Christ shed His blood to become the guarantee of a better covenant (7:22,Matt 26:27,28). This new covenant is not temporary and provisional, but eternal and effective to forgive our sins and bring fellowship with God. The new covenant mediated by Christ is central to Christian faith. What are the advantages of the new covenant over old covenant?
1.  It was made between God and His Son for the remission of our sins(Luke 22:20.
2.  It was sealed with the blood of Christ rather than the blood of animals(1Cor 11:25).
3.  Christ shed His blood for the forgiveness of sin of the world rather than Israel(John 1:29).
4.  It gives us the privilege to call God as our father(Rom 8:15).
5. Old covenant was written on stones, but new covenant is written in our heart through the ministry of the  Holy Spirit who indwells  in us(8:10; Ezk36:26,27).The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Christ in us by giving us the knowledge of God and guiding us in all truth((John 16:13-15;1Cor 2:10).
6. New covenant guarantees that God is merciful and  and remember our sins no more(8:12).
It is not a licence to continue in sin. Our lives should not be characterized  by sin but righteousness,
Everyone who is truly born of God lives righteously

God is always merciful(Ex 34:6,7). God promised that He will forgive our sins(Is 43:25;Ps 103:12). But it was not possible for the blood of animals to take away sins(Heb 10:4). Christ died to take away of the whole world (John 1:29;Heb 10:14). The new covenant is given not only for the Jews but to all who come to God by the person of Christ. Since Christ established the new covenant. the old covenant is obsolete and ready to be put aside(7:13). Do you enjoy the blessings of the new covenant?

Christ Is The Superior High Priest. Heb 7:1-28

In this chapter the author shows that the priesthood of Christ is superior to the levitical priesthood because it is after the order of Melchizedek. He points out that Melchizedek is an Old Testament type of Christ. Only twice Melchizedek is mentioned in the Old Testament(Gen 14:18-20; Psalm 110:4). In chapter 7:1-3, we see the historical account of Melchizedek.  His name means king of righteousness. He was the king of Jerusalem. So he was a king of righteousness and peace. He was also the priest of the most high God(Gen 14:18).He was without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days , nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God(7:3). There is not any  record of his birth or death in the Scripture to show that he is a type of Christ.

The author establishes the superiority of Melchizedek over the levitical priesthood by the fact that Abraham, the ancestor of Levi paid tithe to him and was blessed by Melchizedek. When Abraham paid tithe to Melchizedek, Levi was in turn offering tithe to Melchizedek.  Levi was the descended from Abraham.  Levitical priests were temporary and mortal.  Melchizedek was immortal.  Without any dispute the less is blessed of the better(7: 7,8). Law could not give people complete removal of sin and reconciliation to God. Law and the levitical priesthood are closely connected.  So it became necessary to give way to another priesthood after the order of Melchizedek to forgive sins and bring reconciliation to God.(Heb 7:11,12).

Christ is superior to Aaron because His priesthood is after the order of Melchizedek. Aaron was from the tribe of Levi but Christ came from Judah. Aaron's priesthood was by lineage and not confirmed by oath. It was changeable because of death. So Christ became  High Priest, not by meeting the requirements of law but by the power of life that cannot be destroyed.(7:16). His priesthood is eternal because Christ lives for ever. The Mosaic law was temporary and made nothing perfect, including the levitical priesthood. Whereas Christ lives for ever to make intercession for us. He  gives better hope.

Christ has become the surety of a better covenant. This new covenant is eternal and provides forgiveness of sin to all those who come to God through Christ (7:20-22).  There were many high priests under the old covenant. But Christ stands alone and His priesthood  will never end. Therefore His is able to save completely everyone who comes to God through Him(7:25). Also Christ is our perfect sacrifice and  ideal High priest.  Being perfect, He did not need to offer daily sacrifice for His sins(Lev 4:2,3). But Christ offered Himself  for our sins once on the cross. For He is holy, blameless,  undefiled, separate from sinners and made higher than heavens. He is both our perfect sacrifice and our great High Priest.  Those who trust Christ  are complete in Him(Col 2:10). Do you know Him?

The Danger Of Apostasy & The Assurance Of Hope

Hebrews 6:4-8 is a warning passage.  Here the author warns the danger of apostasy. This warning is to be taken in context with other similar warnings of this epistle. This is an epistle of exhortation to those who are in danger of neglecting the great salvation in Christ Jesus. Some think it is a hypothetical case. Others see this passage refers to believers. It is impossible for a true believer to fall from salvation. Salvation is of the Lord and it is an eternal gift. True  believers are not in danger of losing their salvation. Some think the author is addressing the apostates here. Apostates  are the professing Christians. They show every sign of being a Christians but never experienced the life transforming work of Christ.  Like the seeds fell by the way side, upon the stony places and among thorns, they never received Christ as their Lord and Savior(Matt 13:4-7). They were close to salvation but fall short of salvation because of unbelief. They may associate with true believers but they are not real believers(1 John 2:19). There is not such thing as one being saved, then become unsaved, and then saved again.

In Hebrews 6:4-5, five things are mentioned about these apostates. They were once enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, partakers of the Holy Spirit, tasted the good word of God and tasted the powers of the world to come. If they fall away, they can't be renewed again repentance. Because they are nailing the Son of God to the cross again by rejecting Him and holding  Him unto public shame. Christ died once for our sins and it is not to be repeated(9:28).This passage is widely debated among believers. Here we see three important words representing different group of people.WE, in verses 3 and 9. They refer to the author and the Hebrew Christians. YOU, in verse 9, which refers to believers. THOSE  and THEY in verse 4 and 6 which refer to some one other than the first two groups.

They were enlightened people. They had the knowledge of truth concerning Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. Many people saw His light but chose to live in darkness(John 3:19; 2:23-25). They tasted the heavenly gift namely Jesus Christ(John 3:16).Children of Israel tasted the heavenly gift manna in the wilderness but God was not pleased with them because of their unbelief( 1Cor 10:2-5).Jesus fed 5000 in the wilderness but many of them did not follow Him(John6:66). They were the partakers of Holy Spirit. Jesus taught and did miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit. People were healed and convicted of their sins but did not believed in Him. They sinned against the Holy Spirit(John 12:37). They tasted the good word of God. They heard the word of God but did not benefit them because of their unbelief(Heb 4:2; John 8:48,59). They tasted the powers of the world to come. Jesus taught about heaven, the coming kingdom and the doom of Satan. But Many of them did not believe. They are like ground  that receives rain but bring forth weeds and thorns. What a tragedy to reject untold blessings by living a halfhearted life of unbelief.  Here the author is pointing out apostates, the professing Christians. It is impossible to renew them again to repentance because Christ can't be crucified again and again. But those who believe in Christ their salvation becomes effective for rest of life.

In  verses 9-20 the author is hoping better things of  true believers. They are the beloved ones and persuaded better things of them." God will not forget your labor of love for others".They ministered to the needs of others which is a mark of their love for God(1John 4:20,21). Be diligent and follow the example of those who received the promises through faith and patience. Here author uses Abraham as an example. Abraham waited many years in faith to receive the promise. In his seed all families will be blessed and  is fulfilled in Christ(Gal 3:16). God confirmed His promise with two immutable things. They are the assurance of His promise and His oath(6:17). Our hope of salvation is in Christ and He is the anchor of our soul that reaches heaven. Christ has entered within the veil and He is our High Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. As our forerunner He has entered  heaven and we shall follow Him someday.  Do you have this assurance?. May God help us!!.

The Danger Of Not Growing Spiritually. Heb 6:1-4

The author starts the 6th chapter of Hebrews with an exhortation. His readers are urged leave the elementary teachings about Christ and move on to maturity. It is possible that dullness of hearing the Word can lead to spiritual immaturity.Paul warned Timothy that the time will come people will chose only what they want to hear and remain immature in the faith(2 Tim 4:3,4). Basic doctrines are the first principles of the oracles of God and not to be neglected. But Christians should grow into a fuller knowledge of Christ to become mature.  Matured Christians are those who understand the deeper truths about Christ and distinguish truth from error. The elementary teachings falls into three groups. Repentance and faith.  Baptism and laying of hands; Resurrection of the dead and eternal judgement.

Repentance from dead work and faith in God. Dead works are the works unsaved person does to please God to earn salvation(9:14). They have no saving merit before God. Repentance is the radical reorientation of our outlook towards sin and God which results change in behavior.  They turned away from idols to serve the true and living God(1Thess 1:9).Remorse is not repentance. Godly sorrow will produce repentance
(2 Cor 7:8-10). Faith , on the other hand is both trust and obedience to God. It is not more than the belief in the existence and power of God(Jam 2:23-25).Some one said "To believe mind must be convinced, hearts must be consumed with love and will must be committed in obedience". Forcing some one to believe is authoritarianism. Pleading with out explaining could lead to sentimentalism.  Faith comes from hearing and hearing comes from the Word of God(Rom 10:17). This only will help people to accept God's grace revealed in Christ Jesus(John 1:14).

The doctrine of baptisms and laying of hands are the outwards ordinances. The baptisms mentioned here is in plural. These refer to baptismal rites of either Jew or gentiles. They are external in nature and purify only flesh and not conscience(9:13,14). Only saved people should be baptized according to the commandment of Christ(Matt 28:19,20). The laying on of hands was symbol of ordination, recognition and identification
(1 Tim 4:14; 2Tim 1:6). Resurrection of the dead and the eternal judgment are eschatological doctrines revealed in the Old Testament and as well as in the New Testament. The writer warns that these are basic principles and we should advance to a higher knowledge of Christ. Also the writer recognizes that we will do it with the blessings of God.

If we are not growing spiritually, we may be carried away by the errors of false teachers. We are exhorted to grow in the grace and in the knowledge our our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(2 Pet 3:18). We are saved by grace( Eph 2:8,9). Also we are strengthened by grace(2 Tim 2:1). What ever we are in Christ, it is all because of God's grace(1Cor 15:10). To know Christ we have to study the Bible and make the Bible part of our daily life. It speaks for itself. The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself. It shows what is wrong in our lives and corrects us when we go in the wrong direction. The Bible also helps us to do what is right. It prepares and motivates us to serve God(2Tim 3:16-17) Hebrew Christians knew the basic principles of God and not growing in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Thus they were in danger of carried away by the errors of false teachers. May God help us to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ our great Savior!

Don't Be a Slow Learner. Heb 5:1-14

Jesus Christ is the qualified High Priest. He is also the superior High Priest in that His priesthood is eternal unlike Aaron. Having made purification of our sins by His death, He became our merciful and faithful High Priest for ever(4:15,16). The Old Testament high priests were divinely appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. One of the qualification for the high priest is that he has the capacity to have compassion on those who come to him. He should be able to deal with them gently, understanding their weaknesses. Being human Old Testament high priest had to offer sacrifice for himself as well as for the people.(Lev 16). Christ was divinely appointed to be the High Pries(5:5-6). Here the author quotes Psalm 2:7 and  Psalm 110:4. These references show His sonship and priesthood. As Son He fulfilled Father's will on the cross. He was without sin yet He died once as a sacrifice to take away our sins(9:28)  Some one said that the glory of the risen Savior  finds it's source in the will and purpose of God.  Father planned salvation, Son procured  it and Holy Spirit applies it in those who trust Christ. Christ's priesthood is in the order of Melchizedek who was both a king and a priest(Gen 14:18-20). So Christ is both King and Priest for ever. So Christ's priesthood is indeed superior to the priesthood of Aaron.

In Hebrews 5:7-10, we learn about Christ's agony in the garden of Gethsemane. There He prayed with  tears to the Father who was able to save Him from death. His prayer was answered because of His reverence for God. The answer came, not in the sense that the cup was removed from Him but drinking that cup He would accomplish the saving purpose of God.  He came forth victoriously  by submitting Himself  to Father's will and thus facing the cross fearlessly. Even in the darkest hour Christ provided a timeless example of prayer for us to follow. Thus He learned obedience by the things He suffered. He was never disobedient to the Father. His suffering was a necessary part of His incarnation to relate fully to human conditions so that He could become their compassionate High Priest. Thus having been made perfect,  Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him(5:10).Here "Perfect"  means fully qualified. to be the author of our eternal salvation. He is the almighty God at the same time Christ is Son man. He is the creator but He became the man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.  He is the Lord of glory yet He is the lowly Jesus. He is Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. He is able to save us completely because He ever lives to intercede for us(7:25).

In Hebrews 5:11-14, the author fears that his readers are not spiritually grown to understand his teaching.
It might refer to Christ's priesthood in the order of Melchizedek. Though they have been saved long enough, they remain infants in the knowledge of Christ. Here the author warns believer of the danger of not growing in their faith. It can lead to apostasy from Christ. Solid food is only for full-grown believers. Only the matured  Christians have the ability to discern both good and evil. This is a reference to truth from error. It is sad to see many believers remains spiritually infant and in need of constant help. They have no interest in the study of the Scriptures. They are unable to make spiritual discernment between truth and error. Also they are unable to instruct others. They are in danger of drifting from Christ..So let us grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ  (2Pet 3:18). May God help us!!

Christ, Our Great High Priest. Heb 4:14-16

Joshua could not lead Israel into the promised land because of their unbelief. Likewise Christians can miss out the spiritual rest or blessings, Christ has already promised. It is the perfect and eternal rest because of the finished work of Christ on the cross. And  He lives for ever to make intercession for us(John 17:4; 19:30; Heb 5:9; 7:25).  This rest  is not a physical rest but the spiritual blessings. We must make every effort to enjoy this rest in Christ Jesus. We will enter into our eternal rest in  the New Jerusalem one day. There we will serve Christ and reign forever and ever(Rev 22:1-3).. So author exhorts believers to be diligent in serving Christ now and enter into His rest( Matt 11:28-30; Heb 4:11).

God has given us His Word so that we can enter into His promised rest by believing in the great and precious promises of God.  It has the power to transform our lives and root out our unbelief. Only the Word of God has the power to convict us of our sins.  God knows the secrets of out hearts and His word reveals them(Ps 139:7-12).  It reveals the thoughts and intents of our hearts(4:12). This is the God to whom we must give account(4:13).So let us admit our sins before God and seek His forgiveness(2 Sam 12:13).  Ask God to spare others from the consequences of our sins(2 Sam 12:16). Let us acknowledge our sins to God and forsake them. He will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:7-10)

Having completed the comparison between Joshua and Christ, the author exhorts the believers to consider the Christ our Great High Priest. He is the Great High Priest because He has passed through the heavens into the very presence of God and lives for ever(4:14). Every year the Old Testament  high priest passed through the veil into the Holy of Holies to make atonement for the sins of Israel(Lev 16)  After sprinkling the atoning blood on the mercy seat, he had to leave the Holy of Holies immediately. But Jesus Christ made one sacrifice  and entered heaven once for all(Heb 9:28). His sacrifice on the cross was the fulfillment of all Old Testament sacrifices. At that time the veil of the temple was rent  from top to bottom. Christ is the only High Priest and all believers are priests today(1Pet 2:9). We are exhorted to hold fast on Christ and never stop trusting Him.

Our Great High Priest is Jesus the Son of God(4:14). He is human and divine. He entered  heaven in His humanity and divinity. In His humanity Christ was tempted in all areas of life, yet He did not sin. Christ understands our infirmities so that He can sympathize with us. Therefore the author exhorts us to come boldly to the throne of grace to express our needs. Christ is able to to sympathize with us because He suffered and tempted like us. His victory over sin and temptation was the result of His conscious decision  against sin. His throne is not a throne of judgement but of grace. There we can find grace and mercy in times of need. We are in need of His mercy and forgiveness because we all fail in many ways. We also need grace to face temptations and trials in this life(2 Cor 12:9). What a great consolation and encouragement that we have a Great High Priest, who can help us in all our needs!!

Christ is Superior to Moses and Joshua.Heb3:1-4:9

In Hebrews chapter three and four we see the superiority of Christ over Old Testament leaders. This epistle was written to Hebrew Christians. They are the holy brethren. They are separated from the world and belonged to Christ.  They are the part takers of heavenly calling and bound to heaven. Author wants them to consider Christ, the Apostle and High priest of our  confession.Apostle is the one who is sent with authority. This is the only time Christ is referred to as Apostle in the New Testament. He is also our perfect representative before the Father.  Moses was their great leader. From Adam to Moses, there was none greater than Moses. He led Israel from captivity and did many miracles among them. God spoke to Moses face to face and gave the law through him. He is the author of the first five books of the Bible and the greatest historian. God says Moses was the meekest among all men and faithful in the house of God as a servant(Num 12:3,7). So the author presents a contrast between Moses and Christ to show Christ's superiority.Moses was faithful was a servant but Christ as Son. Christ is the builder and in charge of the household of God. Therefore son has more honor then the servant. Here the household is the entire family of God. So the author exhorts us to be loyal to Christ and continue in the faith to inherit the perfect fellowship with God.

From chapter 3:7 on wards we see the warning against unbelief. Verses 7-11 is a quotation from Psalm  95:7-11.Here the writer gives a solemn warning from the tragic example the children of Israel's wandering in the wilderness. Despite all that God has done for them they rebelled against God and perished  in the wilderness. Out of all men came out of Egypt, only two men over the age of 20 entered the promised land. Unbelief is due to hardness of heart. Hardening of the heart is caused by sin. This can lead to apostasy. It is the falling away from God or drifting away  from the truth. This would keep people from experiencing God's best for their lives. The remedy is to exhort one another daily. Sin is pleasurable to senses and can seduce our soul. So the author encourages us to hold to the initial confidence in the Lord. In Christian life it is not how we started that matter but how we finish.

In chapter 3 the author showed how the children of Israel missed the promised land. They were set free through the blood of the Passover Lamb(Ex 12). They were the saved people from judgement.  In chapter 4, the author encourages the readers to consider the experience of Israel and warns that they should not fall short of God's best for their lives. God is not satisfied with saving us from judgement. We are His workmanship( Eph 2:8_10). Israel lost the fear or or owe once they had for God. They heard the good news at Kadeshbarnea about the promised land(Num 14). But it did not profit them because of unbelief. Joshua did not give them rest. David wrote that this rest is still available(Psalm 95:8).We can find this rest not in a place but in the person of Christ(Matt 11:28). This rest speaks of our blessed fellowship with God.We enter in to this rest when we trust Christ. It is the positional rest. We also experience this rest when we live in obedience. One day we will into eternal rest in heaven. Today this promise is still available for one and all (Matt 11:28-30). Believers should  be careful not to miss God's best for our lives because of unbelief. Many people hear the Gospel,  but not profited because of unbelief. So today if you hear the Gospel, harden not your hearts(4:7).May God help the us!

Christ Is Superior In His Humanity!

The theme of the epistle of Hebrews is the superiority of Christ. In chapter one we have seen that Jesus is superior to Prophets and Angels. Hebrew Christians became believers in Christ from a Jewish background. For Jews the concept of a suffering Messiah was inconceivable and  a stumbling block. In chapter two the Author proves that, Christ in His humanity has become our perfect Savior by enduring suffering and death for us(2:5-18). His humanity enabled Him to regain man's lost destiny and dominion(2:5-9). It also enabled Him to bring many sons to glory and restored our lost unity as brothers in the family of God. (2:10-13). His death and resurrection set us free from the fear of death by His victory over Devil(2:14-15).By becoming human Christ has become our sympathetic High priest.(2:16-18).

Christ is superior to angels because the future world will be subjected to Christ and believers. Many consider the " world to come" is a reference to millennial kingdom. God's original plan of creating man was to rule over earth(Gen 1:26-28). But man forfeited his dominion by disobedience. Chapter 2:6-8 is a quote from Ps.8:4-6.Fallen mankind has become subservient to angels for a short time. Now man is subjected to sickness and death. He is bound by time and space. Man is afraid of animal and not reigning over any thing. But God was mindful of him. God has not given up hope for mankind. He thought of us and willing to care for us.This can not be said about angels(2 pet 2:4; Jude. 6). One day man will be crowned with glory and honour. This follows the example Christ, who was made lower than angel for a little while to taste death but glorified through Resurrection and exaltation.  Christ remembered us in our low estate. What a merciful Savior!

Christ became man to suffer and taste death for us. Cross is an essential part of  the plan of salvation. For God to become truly human, He must suffer and die. He was made perfect or fully qualified to bring many sons to glory through suffering.. Christ was always perfect. But by His perfection salvation was not made possible. We are saved through the death of Christ and not by His sinless life.. Here perfect simply means completely qualified to provide salvation. That was only possible  through His suffering and death. On the cross Jesus cried "it is finished". Thus He became the author and finisher of our salvation. He is the captain of our salvation  to bring many sons unto glory.  What a Savior!

Christ's humanity brought us into the Family of God (Heb 2:11-13). Those who received Christ are the sons of the same heavenly Father(John 1:12). Thus believers are united in Christ as brothers in the family of God, Verses 12 and 13 are quotations from Psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:17,18.  In Psalm 22, David foresaw the suffering and the coming glory of Christ(22:22). The risen savior called His disciples brethren to show their family relationship(John 20:17). Never before they were addressed this way. His death and resurrection restored our lost unity in the family of God.

Adam's sin brought fear and death into human race(Rom 5:12). We lived as slaves to the fear of dying. Christ's death and resurrection set us free from that fear(Col 2:14,15). Christ conquered death and  the devil by His death and resurrection. Death could not keep Christ in it's grip(Act 2:24). Jesus said because I live you shall also live(John 14:19).Believers are not afraid of death, because in death we at home with the Lord in glory(2 Cor 5:8). Through His death and resurrection, Christ destroyed the devil who had the power of death. The word destroy simply  means made powerless. Christ holds the keys of hell and death(Rev 1:18).

Christ's humanity enabled Him to become our sympathetic High Priest(2:17-18).He did not come to save fallen angels but to save fallen human race. This is the heart of the message of this epistle. Christ was not under any obligation to do that. He came voluntarily to reconcile us to God by becoming a sin offering(1John 2:2). Christ was faithful to the Father, in that  He did not lower God's holy standard.  He endured God's wrath for our sins on the cross. He is also our merciful High priest, in that He died on our behalf.  He is our compassionate High Priest. Compassion is love in action. Christ is able and willing to help us in our temptations because He experience them all yet with out sin. He can fortify our will and strengthen us in our weaknesses.Christ knows exactly how we feel.  He will provide comfort and strength in times of need. What a wonderful Savior! Do you Know Him?

The Danger Of Drifting.

In Hebrews chapter one we have seen that Christ is superior to prophets because He is the final and complete revelation from the Father. So we must listen carefully the truth we have heard so that we may not drift away from Christ. Drifting is moving in the wrong direction from where ships are anchored. It is a slow process   We drift not because of ignorance but of carelessness. Salvation is a gift from God and never neglect this precious gift. Christians should avoid drifting by growing in the knowledge of Christ and in His grace. If we are preoccupied with the world and neglect the gathering of believers, prayer, fellowship and the study of the Scriptures, we are prone to drift.

Hebrew Christians came to Christ from Jewish faith and ritualism. After they became followers of Christ, they suffered public ridicule and persecutions from Romans and Jews( 10:32,33). There was shame associated with the name of Jesus of Nazareth.  For Jews the Crucifixion of Jesus was the ultimate disgrace and curse. Christianity was not a recognized religion. So many of them  were tempted to go back to their old religion to avoid persecution and shame. These Christians were not anchored in Christ.  So the author exhort and warn the believers to give more earnest heed to the things they have heard. Other wise they are in danger of drifting away from Christ. The law was given through the mediation of angels(Act 7:53). Disobedience of the law received just punishment. If so, how sever would be the punishment of those who neglect the great salvation proclaimed by Christ.

Christ is the author of the great salvation. It was first announced by Lord Himself. Those who were eye witnesses of Christ passed on this good news to us. It was verified by signs and wonders and various miracles and by giving gifts of the Holy Spirit..  Signs were to attest the divine nature of the message. Wonders show how it effected the people. Power points to God as the source of them. So the author asks, how can we escape if we neglect so great salvation. Why is it so great salvation? Because it cost the life of  the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). It is the only salvation for mankind(Act 4:12).It is the answer for man's fundamental problem and accessible to rich and poor. This is the great salvation because it is the eternal covenant between man and Holy God.  Salvation is a gift from God and can not be earned by good works. Who ever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Rom10:13).

Author warns the readers about the danger of neglecting so great salvation. Those who do not take this Word seriously will drift away from  Jesus Christ(2:1). Drifting can lead to doubting and hardness of heart(3:7-13). This would lead to dullness of hearing and lack of interest in the word of God(5:11).Those who neglect the Word will  despise it sooner of later. This would lead them to sinful life style(10:26). Receiving the knowledge of the truth never save anyone but faith in the revealed truth of Jesus Christ. Those who despise  the Word may refuse even to listen the Word of God and will not escape the judgement of God(12:25).

If you are drifting from Christ, there is no place to go. Jesus is waiting for you. He wants to welcome you and restore you to His fellowship. He is the anchor of our faith and hope. His Word reveals the great plan of salvation. Those who believe Him will be saved. He wants us to grow in the grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.  And do not neglect the study of the Scripture, the gathering of the believers and prayer. Let us surrender ourselves to Christ and anchored in Him, so that we may not drift from Him. May God help us!.

Christ Is Superior To The Angels.

In the first century Hebrew Christians gave great importance to angels because of their role in the giving of the Law(Act 7:53; Gal 3:19)Some even taught that Christ Himself was an angel, thus able to do miracles. There is evidence in the Scripture that angels were worshiped(Col 2:18). So it became necessary to prove that Christ is superior to angels. From eternity to eternity Christ is the Son of God and Creator of all things including the angels(Col 1:16). They are the heavenly host, serving as messengers and ministering spirits.  In this epistle the author is quoting seven Old Testament passages to prove the superiority of Christ over angels.

1. Christ is superior to angels because He inherited a more excellent name than angels(1:4,5). "Thou art my Son".This is a quotation from Psalm 2:7.Angels are called sons of God collectively but never called Son individually(Job 1:6). Christ has a unique relationship with the Father(John 20:17). The prophecy of Psalm 2:7 was fulfilled in the  resurrection of Christ.(Act 13:32,33). It was a reference of His position at the throne of God, after completing the plan of salvation. He is declared to be the Son of God because He is the eternal Son of God(John 17:5; Rom 1:4).His name is above every name and at His name every name will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father(Phi 2:9,10). So He is superior to angels.

2. Christ is superior to angels because they are commanded to worship Him(1:6). The is a quotation from Psalms 97:7. This seems like a reference to Solomon but his throne was not eternal. But Christ will reign over Israel for ever and His kingdom will never end(Luke 1:32).To Mary, Christ was the first born(Luke 2:7). He is the first born among many brethren(Rom 8:29). This is a reference Christ's supreme position and our conformation to His image. He is the first born from the dead, a reference to Christ's resurrection from the dead(Rev 1:5). The universal acknowledgement of His Lordship and worship will take place at His second coming. Angels are also ministering spirits(Heb 1:7). This is a quotation from Psalm 104:4. There are created beings. Scholars suggest that the word spirit can be translated wind.  Elijah was taken up in the whirlwind(2King 2:1). So are the angels serving the Lord. They served Christ in His temptation and passion(Matt4:11;Luke 22:43).As servants, angels are inferior to Christ who created them.

3. Christ is superior because He is God enthroned and anointed(Heb 1:8,9).This a quotation from Psalm 45:6,7.Here Christ is referred to as God(Greek-theos). To the Son, God the Father says"your throne o God is for ever and ever. This is an undeniable proof of the deity of Christ. Those who deny this emphatic statement has an issue withe God and the Bible. Further here it says, His throne is for ever. This speaks of the eternality and majesty of the Son. He has been anointed with the oil of gladness. This speaks of His kingship. Jesus having completed the work of redemption is enthroned in glory and anointed with the oil of  gladness (Psalm 110:1). Jesus is indeed God, otherwise our faith is meaningless.

4.  Christ is superior because He is the creator(Heb 1:10-12).These verses are quoted from Psalm 102:25-27.Angels are created beings. Christ is the eternal creator.Everything is exposed to decay and will perish but He will not change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever(13:8).Those who believe Christ have eternal life and will be with Him for ever.Yes, the one whom we worship never changes. Blessed be His name!

5.  Christ is superior because He is sovereign(1:13-14). This is a quotation from Psalm 110:1. Angels are only servants. He sits at the right hand of the throne majesty. During His incarnation He was not sitting there. After He completed the work of redemption, He sat at the right hand of God making intercession for us(Rom 8:34).On the cross Christ conquered Satan and He is superior over Satan." Making thine enemies thy footstool," is a  reference to an ancient custom of victorious kings placing their feet on the neck of the defeated kings(Joshua 10:24) This also gives us the picture of the ultimate reign of Christ  soon going to take place. (Rev 11:15). This is the beginning of the end. This is the hope of the world . Angels are ministering at the throne of Christ. They are sent to minister to those who are saved(1:14). They are appointed to minister to us in times of trouble(Psalm 91:11,12). Yes. Christ is the sovereign king. He is our Savior. He is our provider and protector. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Do you know Him? He is indeed superior to angels!!

Is Jesus Prominent or Pre-imminent?

The theme of the epistle of Hebrew is the superiority of Jesus Christ.People ask many questions about Jesus Christ. Why Jesus had to be born? Why He had to die? Why He had to be resurrected? Why Jesus ascended to heaven? The answer is the book of Hebrews. Some call this book the fifth Gospel. The first four Gospels explain what Christ did on earth. Hebrews describes what Jesus is doing in heaven. Hebrews may be compared to Romans. Romans reveals the necessity of the Gospel. Hebrews explains the superiority of the Christian faith. Christ is superior to Old Testament prophets. Hebrews starts with no self identification of the author or greetings. There is a sense of urgency in the writing of this letter. During the Old Testament  period, God spoke to us in different ways and different times.  God  spoke to us through dreams, visions and prophets over a period of many years(2Sam 23:2; 2Pet 1:21). This revelation was incomplete and fragmentary. Old Testament Prophets were testifying of Christ(Lk 23:26; John 5:39;Rom 1:2).To Moses God appeared in a burning bush( Ex 3:2) To Elijah he spoke in still small voice(1 King 19:12 ).To Isaiah God spoke in a vision(Is 6:8).But in these last days God has spoken to us through His Son(Heb 1:2). It is the final and complete revelation from the Father. The period of last days begins with Christ's incarnation and ends at His second coming(Heb 9:26).  This letter was not written to scare but to encourage the readers.

First,Christ is superior to O.T Prophets because He is the complete revelation of God. He is the Word that became flesh and lived among us. Disciples saw His glory as the glory of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth( John 1:1,14). Jesus revealed the Father to us(John 1;18). He is the living Word and the Bible is the written Word . It is the once for all given Word for our faith and holy living(Jude 1:3) So we do not need any further revelation today but illumination on the Word of God to know Christ..

Secondly, Christ is superior to prophets because He is future heir of all things. All things belong to God(Ps 24:1). Since Jesus is the Son He is the rightful heir of all things (2:5-9). All believers are also the part of His inheritance(Eph 1:18). He owns us by creation and redemption.  We are joint heirs with Christ and reign with Him side by side one day. May be it is a reference to millennial reign  in the future.

Thirdly, Christ is superior to prophets because He is the creator of all invisible and visible things(Jn 1:3). Father delegated the creation process to Son. In Him and by Him and for Him all things were created.(Col 1:15-17). He is the sovereign source, the divine agent, and for His glory all things were created.  He is the first cause of creation(Rev 3:14). We live in a universe that belongs to Christ. In creation we see God's power and wisdom. Scripture says "Christ is the power and wisdom of God"(1Cor 1:24).

Fourthly, Christ is superior over prophets because He is the brightness of God's glory. He represent God exactly. Christ is the radiance of the brightness of God's glory. God is clothed with majesty and glory. He revealed His presence through His glory in the Tabernacle(Ex 40:34).Christ has revealed the invisible God (.John 1:18).Peter said that  we are witnesses of His glory.(2 Pet 1:16-18).No angel or prophet could make that claim. Christ is the express image or the imprint of God. Jesus said " I and my Father are one"(John 10:30).He who has seen Christ has seen the Father(John 14:9).Christ is the true God and eternal life(1John 5:20).Great is the mystery of our faith "God was manifest in the flesh"(1 Tim 3:15).

Fifthly,Christ is superior to prophets because He upholds all things by the word of His power. He carries all things into their final destiny. He does control and guide history. You are not your own. He created all things by His word of power for a purpose. (Is 40:26; Jer 32:17).In  Christ all things consist.

Sixthly, Christ is superior to prophets because He purged our sins by His atoning sacrifice. Man's sin brought curse and corruption into this world(Gen 3:17). Apart from God , creation is meaningless and heading into decay and death. Christ came to redeem us from the bondage of sin. God sent  His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to become a sin offering for us.The one who knew no sin was made sin for us(2 Cor 5:21). Old Testament sacrifices could not remove our sins.  But the blood of Christ cleanses us from all our sins(1 John 1:7). Those who believe Christ are declared righteous today upon the merits of Jesus Christ.

Lastly, Christ is superior to prophets because He is the exalted king and the finisher of our faith. He purged our sins once for all and sat down on the right hand of the majesty in heaven. This is in direct contrast to the old testament priestly ministry. They offer repeated sacrifices for sin and continually standing. There was no chair in the Tabernacle and priest were not allowed to sit there.  Christ died only once to take away our sins.  On the cross He said "It is finished". There is nothing left for Him to do for our salvation. Salvation is a gift from God and just receive it by faith. First He came to take away our sins. He will come again for those who wait for Him. Do you know this great Savior? Are you ready to welcome Him?

HEBREWS: Introduction.

Purpose:  The theme of this letter is the superiority of Jesus Christ. This is the only epistle that begins with the word "God". It was written to encourage the discouraged and weary Hebrew Christians to hold fast  to their faith in Christ and go on to maturity. There were challenged to see the preeminence of Christ over Judaism (13:22). Jewish Christians were persecuted by Romans and fellow Jews for their faith in Jesus Christ(10:32-34). So the author shows in this epistle the superiority of  Christ and the new covenant over Judaism. Christ is superior in His person, purpose, priesthood, and principle. In this epistle  many Old Testament references are quoted  to assures the Jewish Christians of their spiritual heritage of the new convent into which they have entered. Also by contrasting the old and new convent the author shows the superiority of Christ. As some one said "this is an epistle of encouragement, examination, evaluation, expectation and exaltation".

Authorship: No one knows who wrote Hebrews. The author of this epistle remains anonymous. Some call Hebrews the orphan epistle. Most assumes the authorship to apostle Paul. It seems the author was a Jew and had knowledge of Jewish traditions and Levitical priesthood.  The language and the personal reference to Timothy also may attribute the authorship to Paul(13:23). Some think that Barnabas or Apollos or Luke might have written this epistle. As Origen of Alexandria wrote regarding the authorship of Hebrews that "who the author of the epistle is, only God truly knows. But scholars suggest that there is abundance of evidence from the early church that Hebrews was a part of the biblical canon and quoted widely in the early church fathers. There has been little question throughout the centuries about the canonicity of the epistle of Hebrews.

Date: The epistle of Hebrews was written prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Throughout the epistle, it is evident that the Jewish sacrificial system was still going on(8:4; 10:8,11). This epistle was written to a second-generation Christians(2:3).They were severely persecuted under Nero for their faith.(12:4). Temple was still standing when Hebrews was written(10:11). There is a mention of Timothy's recent release(13:23). So it would seem logical to assume that this epistle was written between A D 64 and 68.

Readership:  The earliest manuscript shows that this epistle was written "To Hebrews". They were first century Jewish Christians who were in danger of returning to Judaism to escape persecution.  Judaism was a legal religion and Christianity was not. These readers were confirmed in their faith in Christ by those who heard Christ(2:3). They were not poor.So it seems they were not located in Palestine. The author closes the epistle by stating that "those from Italy greet you"(13:24).It implies that Italians outside of Ital were sending greetings back home. So we conclude that Rome was the destination of this epistle. Another possibility is that Hebrews was written from Rome to scattered Jewish believers in the Roman empire.

Theme: The theme of Hebrews  is the superiority Christ over Judaism. The word superior or better appears thirteen times in this letter. He is superior in His person, priesthood and principles of faith. He is the qualified or perfect High priest to represent us. He is greater than Aaron the high priest. He is the author of eternal salvation. He is our great high priest and eternal mediator. He is superior is His priestly ministry. Christ is superior in His power. His kingdom is unshakable. He is our great Shepherd. He is the same yesterday, today and for ever. Hebrews shows the finality of God's revelation for our salvation and Christian life. Do you know this great Savior. As we continue this study , may the Holy Spirit strengthen us to run the race that is set before us(12:1).May God bless you all!

You Follow Me!!

In the last chapter of John's Gospel we read about our Lord's appearance to seven disciples, the restoration of Peter and the prophecy about the future of Peter, and John the beloved disciple. Jesus appeared again to the disciples by the sea of Galilee. After the resurrection of Jesus, Peter did not know what to do. So  he said I am going for fishing. Though he did not invite them, other disciples volunteered to go with him. There is no indication that Peter intended to return to his old occupation permanently. Beware  that our bad example can influence others negatively. They caught nothing during the night. Peter in particular must have felt worthless as a fisherman. He failed his Lord in the past , now he was a failed fisherman.  Then in the early morning hour they heard a voice from the shore"children, do you have any fish?" They said no. They had no clue who he was. He said "through your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some". They obeyed Him because there was something compelling about this stranger. They caught many fish and could not draw in the net because it was so heavy. Then John  said to Peter "it is  the Lord".How did John recognize Jesus? Because Jesus had done this before(Lk 5:4-11).Immediately Peter jumped in to the water and reached the shore. Other disciples joined Peter. By that time Christ had already prepared a meal consisted of fish and bread for them. Jesus asked them to bring some fish that you have just caught. There were 153 fish, yet the net was not torn. Thus Christ manifested  His glory. Jesus invited them to come and dine. He served them bread and fish. They ate in silence under the weight of their unfaithfulness. What a merciful Savior!

In the following verses we see one of the greatest conversations of restoration in history (21:15-17).  Peter realized he had denied his Lord. And he went out and wept bitterly(Lk 22:62). Peter also knew that Jesus had forgiven him. He denied Jesus three times, now the Lord asks Peter three times about his love for the Lord. The Lord was probing the sincerity of Peter's love. First two times Jesus asked Peter "do you love me with a sacrificial love, God's kind of love(Agapao)? Peter responded with a different word for love(Phileo), which means deep friendship love. Each time Peter responded, Jesus reaffirmed his future ministry by saying, "feed my sheep".Third time Jesus used the same word Peter used for love and asked him do you love me  with friendship love? Peter replied "Lord you know everything, you know that I love you". Thus Peter affirmed his devotion to the Lord before receiving the the call to feed and care for the believers. Jesus is the good Shepherd who gave his life to save us. He is also the good Shepherd who restores the sheep and gives the responsibility. They are the under shepherds. And when the chief Shepherd appears, they will receive the crown of glory for their faithful service(1Pet 5:2-4). We must love God before we can serve Him faithfully. If we love God we long for Him(PS 42:1). Then we love the things He loves and hate what He hates. Those who love the Lord will long for His return. If we love Him we will obey His commandments(John  14:15). Like Peter, you may be tempted to believe that you have failed the Lord and God can never use you in His service again.  Peter, repented  and he was restored.  Come to Christ, He will restore you.  A committed heart leads to committed service.

Jesus' first and the last invitation to Peter was follow me.(Mk 1:17; John 21:19). Following Christ should be a consistent experience. When we fail, be honest with the Lord. He will restore us and use us for His glory. Jesus indicated that Peter will have a long and useful life of service. Peter asked about the future of John. Jesus said  to peter, you just follow me. We must not compare our life with other believer's life. Jesus calls Peter to a life of total commitment to Him. How about you and me? The entire Gospel is the testimony of John about the deity of Jesus Christ. John concludes that he has written only a small portion of all that Jesus did.  Jesus is asking each one of us this question. Do you love me? May God help us to know Jesus personally and follow Him faithfully in the coming days. God bless you all!

Why you seek the living among the dead!!

The death and resurrection of Christ are central to Christianity. Christ died for the sins of the world.  Joseph of Arimathea, a  member of the Sanhedrin asked Pilot  the body of Jesus. He was a devout and brave follower of Jesus. He and Nicodemus, who met Jesus at night, hurried to the cross and tenderly removed  the body  of Jesus. Nicodemus brought about hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes for the burial of Jesus' body. This was equal to the spices fit for the burial of royalty. They carefully wrapped Jesus' body in long strips of cloth mixed in the spices and placed the body in the new tomb that belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.  Thus the prophecy of Isaiah 53:9 was fulfilled in the burial  of Jesus' body.Several women observed this process and knew, where Jesus' body was laid(Lk 23:55).

John's Gospel chapter twenty gives the account of  Jesus' resurrection, His appearance to Mary Magdalene,
His ten disciples and  to Thomas. Also it reveals the purpose of this gospel. The resurrection of Jesus is the essential part of the gospel message. Men have tried to honor their heroes by erecting monuments such as pyramids and Tajmahal for the dead. But the tomb of Jesus remains empty There is nothing comparative to this historical fact. Only Christian faith affirms life, hope and immortality. The resurrection  of Jesus was the climax and conclusion of the gospel narrative. It is the crowning miracle of all miracles. The empty tomb was the theme of the early Church. It is the proof that Jesus is the Son of God(Rom 1:4). Christianity stands or falls on the doctrine of resurrection of Jesus Christ. It has the transforming power to change lives. The tearful Mary Magdalene became the joyful witness of Christ. Fearful disciples became the bold preachers of the Gospel. Doubting Thomas became the confident follower.

The original witnesses of resurrection were women(Mk 16:1).  Early morning  Mary Magdalene went to the tomb with spices to anoint the body of Christ. She was wondering that who would remove the stone at the entrance of the tomb. But nothing could stop her from going to the tomb. There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear(1 John 4: 18). Mary found that the body is missing. She run to tell the news to Peter and John. . They entered the tomb, and saw that the body is missing, but was not sure about resurrection(20:9).
Mary returned to the tomb after Peter and John left. Jesus revealed Himself to her.She was told to go and tell the good news to other disciples. This command given to Mary is given to all of us. Then Jesus appeared to all disciples (except Thomas) and gave them the great commission."As my father has sent me, even so I send you".  Only God can forgive sin. But God gave them the authority to proclaim the gospel that include the forgiveness of sin.Jesus also appeared to Thomas and shown him the nail prints of His hands. Thomas immediately acknowledged Jesus' Lordship. His doubt has turned to assurance.Jesus told Thomas that "blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. What a merciful Savior! Seeing is not believing. Facts are good but faith is better. Those who does not believe, often get stuck in their prideful doubt.

This chapter ends with the purpose of this gospel. The greatest sign found in the gospel is the sign of the resurrection. The empty tomb of Jesus was not hard to prove. If there was a  body in the tomb, it was impossible for the resurrection story to survive. Jews substantiated the fact that tomb was empty because they said disciples have stolen the body of Christ. It was suicidal for disciples to steal the body. where they could hide it?Why they should be killed for it? Women were the first witnesses of this empty tomb. At that time women did not have any voice in that society and were to allowed to bear testimony  in a court of law. Jesus is alive. It is relevant because it answers questions about our past, present and future. There is forgiveness of sin in Him. Our future is secured because He lives. Jesus gives reason for living. Nobody can be neutral to this truth. This Gospel is written so that we may understand the urgency of our choice and believe Christ be saved. Do you know this great Savior? Believe Christ and be saved.

Jesus said"I am thirsty"

The focal point of Christ's earthy life was His death on the cross. The disproportionate chapters in the Gospel account allotted to the final week of His life shows the importance of Christ's death. His death was more than an example of  His obedience to His Father. His death was  not the death of martyr or a death of political criminal. He died for our sins(Rom 5:8). It was the ransom price paid for our redemption. Jesus died in our place as our substitute(Is 53:6; 2 Cor 5:21).  He died to reconcile us to God( 2 Cor 5:18,19).  He died to satisfy the righteous demands of God( Rom 3:25). There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents(Lk 15:10).  People are of great value to God. Those who do not know Christ are lost in their sins for ever. Christ paid the ultimate price by dying on the cross for their redemption. He came to seek and save those who are lost. So to be found, one must first admit that he is lost.

We have looked at the first four statements of Christ from the cross in our last study. Today I would like to look at the last three statements. Jesus knew that His end is near. To fulfill the Scripture He said"I am thirsty"(John 19:28). Last six hours He was on the cross, wounded,  burning , swollen up and dehydrated. He experienced intense agony  for you and me. This is the only time Jesus spoke of His suffering from the cross. He knows what is physical suffering means. So He is able to help us in our suffering. Do you experience pain in your body. So was Jesus .Are you misunderstood and neglected by dear ones. So is Jesus. In our sufferings, no one can help us like Jesus. He was thirty to fulfill the prophecy that was written a  thousand years before when crucifixion was known to the world(Ps 22:15). He created heavens and earth. Yet heaven denied Him light and earth denied Him water. They gave Jesus vinegar. The one who is the living water became thirty for us. By His death and resurrection Jesus became the smitten rock from where the living water flowed. Those who believe Him will experience His presence through the Holy Spirit and be satisfied.. The living water will flow from them and  they will  become blessing to others.

The sixth statement Jesus made from the cross was "It is finished"(John 19:30). He came through intense suffering and agony. The purpose of His human existence was to do the will of the Father. Now that work is completed. This was the greatest announcement of victory ever made. The decisive battle with Satan is over. By His death He destroyed the devil who had the power of death and released those who were living in the fear of death(Heb 2:14,15).Jesus willingly offered Himself to God. His death met all God's righteous demands. Atonement for our sin was paid in full. What He began, He completed and nothing can be added to it. Believers are complete in Him(Col 2:10).

The seventh and the last statement Jesus made from the cross we find in Luke 23:46. " Father into thy hands I commend my spirit". Having said this Jesus gave up the spirit.. Father is the first and the last word Jesus spoke from the cross. He endured hell on the cross for us and came through it. . Now He calls God as Father in triumph. Jesus died on His own free will. He dismissed His spirit with a loud voice. Usually last words of dying people are weak voice. Jesus last word was loud and victorious. The centurion heard it, gloried God and said certainly this was a righteous man(Lk 23:47). No body died like Jesus( Gal 2:20). Cross is important because of who died there for us. Isaac Watts wrote" When I survey the wondrous cross on which the prince of glory died".  Seeing the cross means, meeting Jesus who died on it. Surveying the cross means, not turning our eyes away from the one who loved us and gave Himself for us. Do you know this great Savior?

"It Is Finished"

Jesus loved us and gave Himself for us. That is the Gospel story. But many people do not know the extend of His love for them. Still Jesus loves them to the uttermost. There was never a love like the love of our dying Savior. The extend of His love is revealed in the seven statements of Jesus from the cross. "Jesus said Father forgive them for they do not know what they do"(Lk 23:34). Our Savior was scourged, mocked, beaten and crucified by His enemies. Our suffering Savior was hanging on the cross, abandoned by all and experiencing excruciating pain in His body and soul. His Father's love was beyond His reach on the cross.Yet He was thinking about us and prayed for you and me. Jesus prayed for them when they had no idea about what they are doing to Him(1 Cor 2:8). He prayed for us because He had compassion on us.When we did not desire any one to pray for us, He prayed. .Jesus prayed for our forgiveness and not for our judgement. He wanted our judgement to fall on Him. You may hate Jesus but He loves you to the uttermost. Only those who are  forgiven  will appreciate the extend of Christ's love. The self righteous are blind to see our Savior's love for them. The greatest sin is the sin against God's love. Yes, Jesus loves us to the end(John 13:1).

Second statement Jesus made from the Cross was "Verily I say unto you, today you shall be with me in paradise"(Lk 23:43).  Jesus was nailed to the cross between two thieves. Christ is always in the center and He alone is able to save sinners from any where. One thief railed at Jesus saying if you are Christ save yourself and us. But the other thief rebuked the one railing and said don't you fear God  even when you are dying? And he asked Christ for salvation and he received it. He was justified and glorified in the same day. Our salvation is based on Christ's work on the cross and not on our good work(Eph 2:8,9). Salvation is by grace alone, faith alone and Christ alone. Christ loves to save sinners. Today you will be with me in paradise. Saved people are not on probation. We serve Jesus because we love Him.  If you are not saved, will you come to Jesus who died for your sins?

John mentions three women who loved the Lord were standing by the cross(John 19:25). one among them was Mary the mother of Jesus. The disciple Jesus loved,John was also there. Jesus saw His mother and said to her "woman behold your son and to John behold your mother(John 19:26,27). Although Mary was His earthly mother, Christ was her Redeemer and Savior. Thus Christ sets an example for us to provide and care for our parents. In this statement we see Christ's humanity and divinity.

The fourth statement Jesus made from the cross was "My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me?( Matt 27:46)Here we see the high cost of our  redemption. From noon until 3:00 P.M. there was darkness. Why Jesus was forsaken?. Because we were not forsaking our sins. Here we see our sin bearer suffering and agonizing for us. Here we see the ugly color of our sin.  On the cross Christ endured our hell. Hell is real as cross. It is a place of  blackness of darkness. On the cross Jesus bore our sin and suffered our judgement. He was separated from the love of God. .Here where the righteousness and mercy of God  met together(Rom 5:8). Also here we see our Savior's total faith in the Father and His plan of salvation. What a picture of hell!!.Will you not flee from hell by receiving Christ today? Those who are saved, let us approach this great God in wonder and worship acknowledging His indescribable love  for us. May God help us!!

"There they crucified Him"

John's Gospel chapter nineteen gives the account of Jesus's trial before Pilot, crucifixion and the burial. From the human stand point this trial was the greatest crime, tragedy and the mockery of Roman law. But from divine stand point it was the fulfillment of the scripture(Act 2:23). Pilot orders Jesus to be flogged, beaten and insulted. The soldiers tortured and forced the crown of throne on His head.  Pilot presented Jesus before Jews saying that 'behold the man". He hoped that Jews would accept this cruel punishment and spare Jesus from execution. But they chanted "crucify  him, crucify him". Jews were so settled in their conviction but were dreadfully wrong.  Pilot again declared Jesus innocent. Pilot would have stood for his conviction. Pilot asked Jesus" where are you from". But Jesus gave no answer. So Pilot  to Him " to me you don't speak?". Jesus replied "you have mo authority over me unless it had been given from above".  Here we see the truth that earthly ruler can only act when God permits. According to the Roman law Jesus was innocent. But the Jews appealed to the law and said that Jesus is guilty of death since he claimed that He is the Son of God. They said if you let go Jesus, you are not a friend of Caesars and Pilot would be guilty of treason against Rome. So Pilot became more fearful  and their fury frustrated  Pilot to the point that he was willing to compromise his conviction and please the people. His wife also told him to do nothing with this innocent man. Pilot was fearful, confused and spiritually blind. Finally Pilot handed Jesus over to Jews to be crucified. What a tortured situation, knowing the right thing and not able to do it because of fear!

Jesus who was weak, beaten and miserable was made to carry His cross by the soldiers. They crucified Jesus between two thieves at Golgotha. Pilot posted a sign over  the cross that reads "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." The chief  priest demanded that title be changed.  Pilot refused his demand  and said "what i have written, I have written". Each soldier took one garment but they cast lot for the inner garment because it was seamless and woven in one piece from top to bottom. Thus the scripture was fulfilled(Ps 22:18). Thus Christ is now left hanging naked before the angry mob on the cross. There were some women, including His mother standing near the cross. Though women considered as weak were to look weak before the cross. When Jesus saw His mother, He told John to take care of His mother. Christ example teaches that everyone has a responsibility to take care of his parents. Jesus knew that everything was now fulfilled and said"I am thirsty". He hung on the cross, wounded, burning, swollen up, dehydrated  and bearing the sin for us. This is the only time Jesus spoke of His suffering and also to fulfill the prophecy(Ps 22:15).No one knows suffering more than Jesus and He is there to help us when we need it. He became thirsty and died to quench our spiritual thirst.

When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said"it is finished" and gave up His Spirit. That was the greatest announcement of victory ever spoken. The long night of His suffering is over. He finished the task the Father has given to Him(John 17:4).His death was no accident.Jesus died according to the scripture.  He gave His life as a ransom  for our salvation. By His death He  has redeemed us from the bondage of sin, Satan and death( Eph 1:7). He death satisfied the righteous demands of God(Rom 3:25). He died in our place and the greatest exchange ever happened. (2 cor 5:21). When soldiers came to Jesus, they did not  break His legs because Jesus was already dead. One of the soldiers took a spear and pierced His side. These happened  so that the scripture might be fulfilled( Ps 34:20; Zech 12:10). Even the wicked soldiers were involved in fulfilling the plan of God in the death Jesus. Do you know this Savior who loved  and died for you?
